Forty-eight years after he disappeared, Thomas Mercer is standing beneath the one apple tree Bellweather has not touched.
MEET THOMAS
Thomas Mercer was a name in Bellweather's old records long before Morgan ever met the man. A mechanic who vanished in 1978, he should have remained a photograph, a ledger entry, and a question no one could answer.
Instead, Morgan finds him beneath the old apple tree, looking remarkably like the man in the photograph. He recognizes Margaret. He seems to know Morgan. And he understands that something is terribly wrong with the orchard.
“You came back.”
HIS STORY BEGINS
In Black Orchard, Morgan arrives at Bellweather Orchard to find the fruit on every tree turned glossy black. Only the old tree, the one tied to thirteen fallen apples, remains unchanged.
Thomas is waiting beneath it. His appearance raises more questions than it answers, and his urgency makes one thing clear: the orchard is no longer a safe place to linger.
WHAT TO KNOW
Thomas is practical, observant, cautious, and protective. He notices when Bellweather's rules begin to shift, and he reacts quickly when a warning becomes immediate danger.
He has a dry sense of humor, but Morgan has little patience for his habit of offering warnings without explanations. Thomas knows more than he is ready to say. How much more is a question the story has not answered yet.
